Carnival Cruise Lines was founed in 1972 by Ted Arison, with one ship, the TSS Mardi Gras. The line grew and expanded. it debuted the cruise industry's first newbuild in a long time in 1982, the Tropicale, followed by the Holiday, Jubilee, and Celebration, all of which have left the fleet.
In 1990, Carnival debuted the 70,367 ton Fantasy, considered huge at the time. seven other vessels followed, making this class the largest class in the fleet and one of the largest in the cruise industry.
In 1996, Carnival debuted the Carnival Destiny, at the time the largest passenger ship in the world and the first passenger ship over 100,00 tons. Two ships followed after, the Carnival Triumph and Carnival Victory. they were built with one more deck than the Destiny.
In 2001, Carnival debuted the Carnival Spirit, a whole new design for Carnival. Three more ships followed, the carnival Pride, Carnival legend, and Carnival Miracle. These ships were the longest in the fleet until the debut of Carnival Dream.
In 2002, Carnival debuted the 110,000 ton Carnival Conquest. Four more ships followed, the Carnival Glory, Carnival Valor, Carnival Liberty, and Carnival Freedom. This class is almost identical to the Destiny class, only the Destiny is 9,000 gross tons lighter.
In 2008, Carnival debuted the 113,000 ton Carnival Splendor, with no planned sister ships. it is identical to the Conquest class, only about 3,000 gross tons heavier.
In 2009, Carnival debuted its largest and most innovative ship to date, the 130,000 ton Carnival Dream with two planned sister ships, the Carnival Magic planned for debut in 2011, and a yet unnamed ship planned for debut in 2012.
Carnival Cruise Lines has two major competitors, but the primary one is Royal Caribbean International.

Holland America Line
The fleet:
Amsterdam,Eurodam,Maasdam, Nieuw Amsterdam,Noordam,Oosterdam,Prinsedam,Rotterdam,Ryandam,Statendam,Veendam,Volendam,Westerdam, Zaandam, Zuierdam
Holland America was founded in 1873 under the name Netherlands America Steamship Company, transporting immigrants to North America from Rotterdam. It, along with Princess cruises, dominate most of the lodges, hotels, and cruising in Alaska. it was acquired by Carnival Corp in 1989. Holland America is growing larger very quickly, and has passengers that are elderly along with families. It still incorporates its Dutch roots in all of its ships. holland America line also owns a private island in the Bahamas, Half Moon Cay.

Cunard Line
The Fleet:
Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria
In 1839, Cunard was founded. But not under the Name Cunard line. It first came out under the name british and North American Steam Packet Company, made to carry passengers and the Royal Mail from the Old World to, of course the New World.(There is no Relatively Used world. That was a joke. HA ha ha LAUGH!!) Britannia, its first ship, sailed on its maiden voyage(I call in the all sparkly voyage) on july 4th 1840. you may have heard of White Star Line(think Titanic), but they are no longer around.Cunard had many first, like having the worlds largest passenger ship, and the first company to do regular transatlantic crossings. these are only two of many. And be informed, Cunard is NOT a casual cruise atmosphere. They are a luxury cruise line. For a picture of Queen Mary 2, go to the Photos section.
